New Research Guides Firefighters Through EV Battery Fire Response

Firefighters continue to encounter electric vehicle fire incidents, bringing new challenges to fire suppression and responder safety on the fireground.
UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Research Institute released new evidence-based EV fire response guidance, providing fire departments with tactical considerations for lithium-ion battery incidents and a clearer understanding of EV fire behavior. The research is based on full-scale experiments designed to characterize EV fire dynamics, examine firefighter exposure hazards, and support fireground decision-making.
The findings translate three years’ research into practical considerations for emergency response, including fire suppression, responder safety, and post-fire operations. The report is accompanied by the EV Fire Tactical Decision Aid, a fireground reference tool that guides tactical considerations during EV battery fire incidents.
