As wildfire threats grow across the globe, advancing the science and application of risk modeling is crucial to protecting vulnerable communities. UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Research Institute has released its “Wildfire Risk Modeling Evaluation Findings and Community Perspectives” as part of its National Fire Risk research project to address this growing fire threat.

The report presents key learnings and an actionable roadmap from a collaborative research exercise that brought together wildfire risk intelligence experts from across borders and industries to evaluate current risk modeling approaches and identify areas for improvement. Recommendations focus on advancements in modeling science as well as how to make models more actionable for the fire safety decision-makers who use them.

The central finding is that no single model can adequately capture the complexity of wildfire risk. Instead, the wildfire risk modeling community should foster a modular, interoperable ecosystem that integrates complementary models, datasets, and scientific approaches that collectively support the end-to-end wildfire risk assessment process.
