Invisible Risks: New Stories of Impact Documentary Explores Vaping Exposure

Is vaping safer? A new Stories of Impact documentary from UL Research Institutes examines the question through safety science, exploring chemical exposures, who may be affected, and what research reveals when potential harm is not easily visible.
Instead of approaching vaping as a trend to debate, ULRI’s Chemical Insights Research Institute reframes the question through a safety science lens, studying how chemical exposures can impact health and how those findings can be used to better understand and reduce risk.
The documentary features Russell Thomas, Ph.D., who leads the Chemical Insights team, and Cristi Bell-Huff, Ph.D., director of partnerships and outreach. Together, they guide viewers through how safety science examines vaping beyond perception and focuses on exposure in real-world settings.
Many assume because vaping smells better and looks cleaner that it must be safer. In the documentary, ULRI experts ask a set of questions: What is released into the air? Who may be exposed? How might that exposure affect health? And what happens when exposure is not obvious?
By examining how emissions move through shared spaces and where they may settle over time, the film highlights exposure pathways that can be easy to overlook, and emphasizes that when exposure becomes visible, prevention becomes possible.
