Peer-Reviewed Journal Article Examines the Impact of Flashover Fire Conditions on Exposed Electrical Cords and Cables

UL's Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) Research Engineer Craig Weinschenk and Director of Research Daniel Madrzykowski authored a peer-reviewed journal article along fellow researchers that was published in Fire Technology. The "Impact of Flashover Fire Conditions on Exposed Energized Electrical Cords/Cables" focuses on research results from the Impact of Ventilation on Fire Patterns study

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 921, Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations (2017), there are four types of analysis that may be conducted to determine the area of origin of a fire: witness information, fire patterns, arc mapping, and fire dynamics. In 2014, the Fire and Arson Investigation Technology Working Group Operational Requirements issued a set of operational requirements that included the characterization of electrical system response to fire as a research need. 

Answering that research need, FSRI conducted this set of experiments to examine the response of energized cords and different types of circuit protection devices to a growing compartment fire. This article details the experiments and their results.
