Bringing Fire into the Classroom with the Society of Fire Protection Engineers
The Office of Research Experiences & Education (OREE) works with schools and community leaders in safety science to support Xplorlabs implementation in a growing network of education partnerships. One of our community partners is the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) Greater Atlanta Chapter (GAC) Foundation volunteered during a day of fire education in Georgia schools.
As part of this partnership, SFPE members volunteer to help bring Xplorlabs Fire Forensics: Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning fire engineering education into schools in Cherokee County, Georgia.
In 2022, over 1,700 students in three school districts learned about the science of fire directly from SFPE fire protection engineers. By visiting classrooms, the engineers helped students experience the real-world connections between what they are learning at school and how to apply the knowledge and skills of fire dynamics to potential careers.
In May 2022, Dr. Steve Kerber, vice president and executive director of the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), and OREE Senior Director Dr. Kelly Keena shared a video recording of this event at the annual SFPE member meeting.
In August 2022, OREE hosted a reception and dinner for Cherokee County educators and SFPE-GAC volunteers to strengthen the collaboration that is integral to the success of the community education model. SFPE-GAC donated supplies for Xplorlabs Fire Forensics classroom investigation, and we thank them for their continued support and participation.
