Food insecurity continues to be a challenge that affects the safety and well-being of communities across the globe. With an ongoing commitment to our shared mission of “working for a safer world,” UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement joined together to help address this challenge during its second annual Nourish a Safer World campaign.

During the holiday season, the campaign encouraged employees to help fight food insecurity by donating to office food drives, making monetary donations, and volunteering with nonprofit organizations addressing hunger.

Hundreds of employees across both organizations took part in the campaign, collectively volunteering over 480 hours to help nourish their local communities. Additionally, more than 1,000 pounds of food were donated through office drives, and $2,070 was contributed to organizations working to reduce hunger.

To make Nourish a Safer World even more impactful, ULRI-ULSE matched all employee food and monetary donations, pound for pound and dollar for dollar, culminating in $6,388 of total donations directed to the following organizations:

  • Feeding America
  • Connections for the Homeless
  • Salvation Army Evanston
  • Hillside Food Pantry
  • Houston Food Bank
  • Ottawa Food Bank
  • Boys and Girls Club of D.C.
  • Niles Township Food Pantry
  • CARE
  • Howard County Food Bank

ULRI-ULSE’s collective efforts during the campaign helped bring nourishment and well-being to the homeless, families, and children in need.

“Nourish a Safer World shows how powerful we are when we unite our mission with action — each donation and volunteer hour strengthens the safety and well-being of our communities,” said Tina Vaughn, ULRI and ULSE senior manager of community affairs and engagement.

ULRI-ULSE employees packed 100 Thanksgiving meals for families at the Pederson-McCormick Boys & Girls Club in Chicago, Illinois (pictured above). The Club provides essential services and programs to 1,000 members annually and 250 members ages 6-18 daily.

Materials Discovery Research Institute colleagues volunteered at Feed My Starving Children in Schaumburg, Illinois, to help pack 602 boxes containing 130,032 prepared meals, enough to feed 255 children a daily meal for an entire year.

Chemical Insights Research Institute employees spent time at Emanuel Food Pantry in Durham, North Carolina, during its weekly Rice and Beans event. They packed enough rice and beans to help fill the pantry’s weekly grocery box distribution to 800 families.

Employees at the Fire Safety Research Institute sorted and stocked nearly 2,500 pounds of food to help support families in need at the Howard County Food Bank in Columbia, Maryland.

Electrochemical Safety Research Institute employees sorted food donations at the Houston Food Bank, which provides 143 million nutritious meals to their communities across 18 counties through their 1,600 community partners in 2025.
