Dr. Steve Kerber, vice president and executive director of the Fire Safety Research Institute at UL Research InstitutesDr. Steve Kerber, vice president and executive director of the Fire Safety Research Institute at UL Research Institutes, has been named one of the most influential fire service leaders of all time by FireRescue1. Recognized in July 2022 by the fire and rescue resource provider, Kerber joined other fire safety luminaries such as U.S. Fire Administrator Lori Moore-Merrell and former Phoenix Fire Department Chief Alan Brunacini on FireRescue1’s “best of the best” list.

“Steve has led research in the areas of fire safety engineering, firefighter safety, fire forensics, and fire science, and because of his passion, nearly all fire departments (from metros like [the Fire Department of New York] to the most rural operation) operate differently — and more effectively — today than before Steve came along,” said fellow honoree Billy Goldfeder in nominating Kerber, according to the FireRescue1 website.
