The Center for Advancing Safety of Machine Intelligence (CASMI) research hub has been named a top 100 finalist for the 2022 Chicago Innovation Awards, acknowledging the creative collaboration between Northwestern University and the Digital Safety Research Institute (DSRI) at UL Research Institutes that established the hub.

Launched in February 2022, CASMI brings together and coordinates a wide-ranging research network focused on better incorporating safety and equity into machine learning. Leaders of the DSRI-Northwestern University partnership consider CASMI a potential model for future cross-sector research collaborations.

“We’re delighted that CASMI has garnered this recognition,” said Dr. Jill Crisman, DSRI’s executive director. “Today’s complex machine learning safety challenges require these types of innovative research collaborations to help ensure emerging technologies deliver the greatest possible human safety benefits.”
