State-of-electrode (SOE) analytics of lithium-ion cells under overdischarge extremes
Overdischarge is an electrical abuse that can occur in Li-ion battery modules. Previous studies have focused on copper dissolution, but this study investigates the role of each electrode in degradation mechanisms and impacts of C-rates. The study found that the C-rate has a dual effect on overdischarge abuse, affecting both anode-centric failure mechanisms and cathode-centric degradation pathways. This study provides new insights on overdischarge abuse fundamentals and effective mitigation strategies.
