The increase of lithium-ion batteries across the waste and recycling ecosystem underscores the need for research that examines safety alongside the technologies shaping their end-of-life management. At the 2026 MWMA Fall Summit, taking place Oct. 26-28 in Baltimore, Maryland, UL Research Institutes’ Electrochemical Safety Research Institute will share technical insights on lithium-ion battery safety and recycling.
During the “Lithium-Ion Batteries” luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 27, beginning at noon EDT, Migo Szeman Ng, Ph.D., principal research scientist, will discuss critical issues across the lithium-ion battery lifecycle, including the science behind direct recycling and important advancements in battery safety.
Through a research-focused presentation followed by a moderated Q&A, Migo will help connect the underlying science with broader conversations surrounding the management, recovery, and safety of lithium-ion batteries.
Throughout the event, attendees can also connect with the Electrochemical Safety Research group at the exhibit booth and learn more about ongoing work in this area.
The MWMA Fall Summit brings together public-sector executives and decision-makers working across municipal solid waste, recycling, and sustainability to exchange expertise on emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices shaping the sector.
