UL Research Institutes and Watts of Love
Safe, Sustainable Power for All
Approximately 1 billion people live in energy poverty.
They lack adequate, reliable, and affordable energy to safely and sustainably light and heat their homes, cook their meals, and do other daily activities. This strains their health, personal welfare, and economic development.
To combat these challenges, UL Research Institutes is partnering with Watts of Love, a nonprofit that distributes solar lights to end the cycle of poverty in areas lacking access to electricity. Its mission pairs perfectly with our aim to make the transition to clean energy safer and more sustainable.

Perspectives
When science meets service
The UL Research Institutes’ Electrochemical Safety team is using its scientific expertise in lithium-ion batteries and sustainable energy to help Watts of Love light recipients safely use and dispose of their solar powered lights. The lights rely on a lithium-ion battery for backup power.
Dr. Judy Jeevarajan offers her perspective on the importance of applying scientific knowledge to address real world problems and serve communities.
