We are three distinct safety science organizations united by our shared history dating back to 1894 when the nonprofit Underwriters Electrical Bureau — a predecessor to UL Research Institutes, UL Standards & Engagement and UL Solutions — was founded. Each organization operates as a separate entity with the common mission of working for a safer world.

The UL Enterprise consists of three separate safety science organizations – two nonprofit organizations and a commercial business – that have a shared heritage and mission of working for a safer world that dates back to 1894. The three distinct organizations each serve separate roles in helping to advance safety science:
UL Research Institutes is a nonprofit organization that conducts rigorous, independent research into ongoing and emerging threats to safety, security, and sustainability. As risks evolve and their consequences become more severe, UL Research Institutes pursues scientific discovery and innovation to advance public safety — addressing today’s critical challenges and identifying those of tomorrow.
UL Standards & Engagement is a nonprofit organization that translates safety science into action through standards development and advocates for solutions on pressing risks across the globe. Through partnerships and convenings, public safety campaigns, and a vast and growing body of standards that inform the manufacturing and testing of products and systems, ULSE has a tangible impact on a safer, more secure, and sustainable future.
UL Solutions is a commercial business that solves safety, security and sustainability challenges for customers and stakeholders around the world. A global safety science leader, UL Solutions provides testing, inspection and certification services, together with software products and advisory offerings, that support our customers’ product innovation and business growth.

The development and maintenance of ULSE’s 1,700+ standards and other documents isn’t possible without the input of diverse groups of experts representing a broad range of perspectives and interests. Technical committee members and nonvoting stakeholders submit, review, and comment on proposals to create new standards or amend existing ones.
