As part of its Be Nice To Your Device campaign, the Electrochemical Safety Research Institute (ESRI) is hosting an educational outreach event over the summer to engage students on safe lithium-ion battery recycling. The event is co-organized with Tech Fest Live, a Houston-based nonprofit organization that connects youth with educational technology opportunities.

From June 18 through July 25, ESRI will host a lithium-ion battery recycling competition during Tech Fest Live's summer program in the Greater Houston area. The program takes place at the following six Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs (SABGC) with about 500 children ages 10-14:

  • Aldine Westfield Club
  • Irvington (Temple) Club
  • Garden City Club
  • Northwest Club
  • Houston International Club
  • Pasadena Club

Each club will learn about an important tech-related recycling issue, help the Earth, and contribute to scientific research — all at the same time! The competition will take place during the operating hours of each individual club. The batteries collected through this summer program will be used in ESRI’s battery recycling research project for the U.S. Department of Energy.
