UL Research Institutes’ Electrochemical Safety Research Institute will present innovative research and engage with the global electrochemical science community at the 249th Electrochemical Society (ECS) Meeting, on May 24–28, 2026, in Seattle, Washington.

Aligned with ECS’s mission to advance electrochemical and solid-state science and technology in the public interest, the Electrochemical Safety Research team will contribute technical presentations spanning grid-scale energy storage, next-generation battery chemistries, solid-state materials, and battery safety modeling.
As an invited speaker of the Symposium A02: Whittingham Young Investigator and Student Slam 2, Wan Si Tang, Ph.D., director of novel materials & new energy forms, will present “Design Improvements of Hydro(car)Borate Congeners with Fast-Ion Conductivity for Solid-State Batteries” on May 26 at 3:00 p.m. PDT, highlighting advances in solid electrolyte design for next‑generation batteries.
Additional team members presenting technical talks throughout the meeting include:
- Devashish Salpekar, Ph.D., research scientist, “Impact of Off-Nominal Conditions on Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Performance and Safety” on May 24 at 2:40 p.m. PDT.
- Dhevathi Kannan, Ph.D., research scientist, “Characterizing the Performance of Commercial Sodium-Ion Batteries” on May 25 at 11:40 a.m. PDT.
- Deepti Tewari, Ph.D., research scientist, “Experimental and Modeling Study of Electrical Connectivity Effects on Battery Pack Degradation” on May 26 at 10:20 a.m. PDT.
- Avijit Karmakar, Ph.D., research scientist, “A Hierarchical Physics-Based Framework for Thermal Runaway Propagation in Next-Generation Battery Modules” on May 27 at 3 p.m. PDT
The team will also exhibit a booth throughout the meeting, offering attendees opportunities to engage directly with researchers on emerging challenges and solutions in electrochemical safety, performance, and reliability.
