Teacher Evaluation Program Promotes Fire Safety Knowledge
When children understand the dangers and risks posed by fire, they can also learn about some of the small (yet important) steps they can take to prevent fires at home or at school. With this thought, Underwriters Laboratories initiated the Safer Schools Safer India (SSSI) program in 2015 to create awareness among young students on the basics of fire safety to better comprehend, think, discuss, and act in case of fire emergencies.
Underwriters Laboratories partnered with Goa's Directorate of Education (DoE) and Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) in 2015 to train teachers and students of Grades I-IV across government-aided primary schools in Goa. So far, the SSSI program reached more than 12,000 students in the state. The program's key objective is to raise the level of prevention and preparedness of school children to minimize loss of life and property from fire and non-fire emergencies and to inculcate safety consciousness among children and the general public.
The Teacher Evaluation Program was conducted from March 19-23, 2018 and included the participation of approximately 100 teachers and 1,500 students from north and south Goa. Teachers used training modules provided by Underwriters Laboratories, including the Bittoo module and the Safety Smart video produced in partnership with the Walt Disney Company.
Underwriters Laboratories plans to continue its engagement with the DFES and DoE to reach out to more schools in Goa.
