Oct. 12: 2021: The Future of Electrochemical Safety and Energy Sustainability

Batteries, and other electrochemical energy storage systems, power our lives and grant us freedom in our energy use. As with any engineering solution, they have trade-offs. For instance, lithium-ion batteries require intensive resource extraction, but they also facilitate renewable energy storage that is lightweight, occupies less volume and provides long run times and power for the required lifetime of the device. As sustainability becomes an increasingly pertinent consideration, how will we engineer our energy storage? What is the future of electrochemical energy? Join the conversation with Judy Jeevarajan, vice president and executive director of the Electrochemical Safety Research Institute.

Nov. 2, 2021: Anti-Counterfeiting

Counterfeit products encompass much more than designer knockoffs. Their implications for consumer safety, societies, economic prosperity and organized crime are deep and far-reaching. What are the real risks posed by counterfeit products? How can safety science and research be applied to solve these problems? Listen in on our conversation on anti-counterfeiting efforts with UL Standards & Engagement Educational Programs Director Monica Mena.

Nov. 16, 2021: Research and Fire Investigation

Fire investigations are conducted using a systematic approach based on the scientific method. First, the investigator identifies and defines the problem. Next, they collect and analyze data to develop their hypotheses. Then they test their hypotheses and select the right one. Sounds simple, but it’s not. The Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) at UL Research Institutes conducts research to improve fire investigations by providing cutting-edge information on fire dynamics in structures and the impact of ventilation on fire patterns while generating data that can be used to test hypotheses. Hear from FSRI Research Director Daniel Madrzykowski on how experts reconstruct a fire, why research is needed to support fire investigation now more than ever, and how research improves fire investigation and safety for fire investigators.

Nov. 30, 2021: Campaigns Communicating Research

Research is essential for developing a scientific understanding of the world around us. Scientific information campaigns help us catalyze that understanding into action. Close Before You Doze is a successful campaign built upon firefighter safety research. How are safety science campaigns developed? What are they built on, and how do we measure their impact? Join the conversation with Jennifer Williams, senior content specialist at the Fire Safety Research Institute.

March 31, 2022: International Engineering and Geographic Diversity

Although the need for safety is universal, sometimes the definition of safety – and how safety is determined – differs among different countries. Different geographies have different codes and installation practices, different materials in use and different training and practices. When developing safety standards for international application, it’s crucial to consider the differing needs of various geographies as well as differences in climate and culture. How is an understanding of geographic diversity incorporated into developing international safety standards? How does the standards development process differ between national and international standards? Join the conversation.
