With applications ranging from autonomous vehicles to diagnostic medical systems, machine intelligence promises to reshape our daily lives in numerous ways.

The Center for Advancing Safety of Machine Intelligence, or CASMI, is a research hub designed to create the knowledge we need to develop these technologies safely and equitably. A collaboration between the Underwriters Laboratories Digital Intelligence Safety Research Institute and Northwestern University, CASMI is dedicated to maximizing machine learning benefits while recognizing and averting its potential negative effects.

In support of this effort, CASMI brings together and coordinates a wide-ranging research network to explore machine learning’s potential impacts on human health and safety. By developing connections and collaborations across multiple institutions and researchers from different disciplines and backgrounds, CASMI fosters collaborative research capable of yielding results that any one group would be unlikely to achieve in isolation.

CASMI also funds selected research projects that answer critical questions in the machine learning field. Six initial catalyst projects have been selected to begin in spring 2022, with another call for project proposals slated to open in fall 2022.
