You might already know many counterfeit products involve the use of toxic materials, which pose health and safety risks to the user. Those toxic materials also pose a danger to the environment by polluting air and water supplies. Counterfeit products also negatively impact economies by paying workers below market wages, and thereby displacing legitimate economic activity. The International Chamber of Commerce has estimated that the net job losses due to the counterfeit economy will reach 4.2 to 5.4 billion by 2022. It might also surprise you to learn that the counterfeit trade exploits workers and child labor.
