New research by Oregon State University and the Fire Safety Research Institute investigated wildfire-induced depressurization of water distribution systems, which can allow combustion gases to be back‑siphoned into the systems, introducing VOCs without visible infrastructure damage.

- [Webinar: Computational Toxicology Capabilities to Advance Chemical Safety ](https://ul.org/events/webinar-computational-toxicology-capabilities-to-advance-chemical-safety/): The first webinar in our four-part “Chemical Safety for Individual and Community Health” series, moderated by Russell Thomas, Ph.D., introduces the expanded capabilities of UL Research Institutes’ Chemical Insights. Although thousands of chemicals and mixtures are available on the market, traditional toxicity and exposure data are available for only a small fraction of these chemicals. Two new research centers within Chemical Insights, the Center for Chemical Informatics and Screening, led by Katie Paul Friedman, Ph.D., and the Center for Scientific Computing and Data Management, led by Stephen Edwards, Ph.D., are working to fill this gap. These research teams will develop new approach methods (NAMs)-based solutions to rapidly assess thousands of data-poor chemicals in the environment and work to make high-quality data and decision-making tools available for researchers, stakeholders, and the public.

- [ACS Fall 2025 | Innovations in Chemistry](https://ul.org/events/acs-fall-2025-innovations-in-chemistry/): Migo Szeman Ng, Ph.D., Lead Research Scientist at the Electrochemical Safety Research Institute (ESRI) will participate in the ACS Fall 2025 meeting in Washington, DC, on August 19 to present ESRI's research findings on the topic of magnesium batteries. Magnesium batteries have the potential to offer higher energy density, faster charging capabilities, and improved safety compared to lithium-ion batteries, primarily due to their lower tendency to form dendrites. To enhance the overall performance of Mg batteries, studying the mechanisms of their stripping and plating processes is crucial. This study explored magnesium battery performance, focusing on stripping and plating mechanisms that impact safety and cycle life. 
- [Sodium-Ion Battery Conference](https://ul.org/events/sodium-ion-battery-conference-2025/): Sodium-ion batteries are gaining traction globally as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries. However, there have been limited studies that examine their performance and safety characteristics. On August 12 at 8:30 a.m. CT, ESRI's Research Scientist, Dhevathi R Rajagopalan Kannan, Ph.D., will present ESRI's research findings on the performance and safety of commercial sodium-ion batteries, focusing on cycle life, overcharge, overdischarge, and external short tests at cell and module levels. The research includes destructive physical analysis to inform the development of safer and more reliable sodium-ion energy storage systems.

- [2025 ReMA Safety and Environmental Conference (ReSEC)](https://ul.org/events/2025-rema-safety-and-environmental-conference-resec/): The Electrochemical Safety Research Institute will participate in the 2025 ReMA Safety and Environmental Conference (ReSEC) in Nashville, Tennessee, on July 14-15. The conference will bring together industry leaders, safety professionals, and environmental experts to tackle the most pressing challenges in the recycled materials industry. The event will focus on cutting-edge insights, best practices, and regulatory updates to ensure a safer, more sustainable industry. - [International Battery Materials Association Annual Meeting 2024](https://ul.org/events/international-battery-materials-association-annual-meeting-2024/): The Electrochemical Safety Research Institute (ESRI) has been carrying out safety and performance characterization tests on commercial sodium-ion cells. The results of the performance of the single cells under two different rates and the safety tests at the module level will be presented at the International Battery Materials Association (IBA) 2024 by ESRI Research Scientist Dr. Dhevathi R. Rajagopalan Kannan on Sept. 13 at 9:40 a.m. Atlantic Daylight Time (ADT). The presentation is titled "Characterization of Performance and Safety of Commercial Na-ion Cells." ESRI will also set up a booth exhibit.
