Overcharge and Aging Analytics of Li-Ion Cells
Overcharge occurs when a lithium-ion (Li-ion) cell is charged above the manufacturer’s recommended end-of-charge voltage. This phenomenon represents a serious safety concern for large scale applications of Li-ion batteries specifically in battery designs where no cell-level monitoring and control are provided. Despite the availability of several studies of aging-induced and overcharge-induced degradation, there still exists a knowledge gap of what would happen if both degradation mechanisms occur simultaneously. This study focuses on the cumulative effect of overcharging a lithium-ion cell with long-term charge and discharge cycles.
