Four UL Teams Band Together to Promote UL Xplorlabs
- Education and Outreach
- Engaging the Next Generation of Real-World Problem Solvers Through Safety Science Education
More than a dozen UL employees came together to introduce Xplorlabs Module 2 – Fire Forensics: Claims and Evidence – at the USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C. An interactive 40' x 40' booth was designed to give festival attendees a hands-on experience of the fascinating world of fire forensics.
In an "all-hands-on-deck" effort to promote Xplorlabs to an attendance of over 370,000, members of four NFP teams – Education and Outreach, Strategy and Marketing, the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute, and the UL Archives – worked together to attract visitors to the Xplorlabs booth experience.
Designed to complement the Xplorlabs module, the Education and Outreach team created a specially-designed mock fire investigation journal as a guide to navigate the booth. Using this journal, attendees learned about the fire triangle, saw and took notes on burned artifacts from an actual fire, recorded evidence and made their own claims as to how a lab-controlled fire originated. As an added bonus, booth visitors had the opportunity to talk to professional fire investigators from the Washington, D.C. metro area.
The three day event was held April 6-8 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. UL staff met with educators, parents and even a few leaders in science education circles in hopes of driving increased use of Xplorlabs and forging new partnerships with other large STEM organizations.
