UL to host UL Safety Index™ Summit addressing global safety issues

Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global safety science company, is hosting the UL Safety Index™ Summit in Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday, November 8, 2018. This full-day event will bring together key stakeholders in academics, policy and civil society to explore how the UL Safety Index can be leveraged to accelerate action on safety issues in at-risk geographies.

Experts in the areas of injury data, demographics and safety will present their viewpoints on trends, challenges and opportunities in order to facilitate meaningful dialogue to improve safety, particularly in underserved populations.

David Wroth, UL’s director of Data Science, is looking forward to this one-of-a-kind event. “We’ve held Safety Index events targeting  specific countries’ safety challenges earlier this year, but this is the first time we’re convening safety leaders to discuss the criticality of global safety and how to pursue the ambitious goal of advancing safety and improving safe outcomes on a broader scale.”

Introduced in 2016 and updated annually, the UL Safety Index is the quantification of the relative state of safety in 187 countries around the world. Based on societal drivers and outcomes related to unintentional injury, the Index measures the contributions of national resources and institutions, safety systems and frameworks and safety outcomes. With this as a foundation, the UL Safety Index can be used to support efforts by governments, safety professionals, policy makers, the private sector and non-governmental organizations to understand and prioritize actions to improve safety around the world.

“The goal of the UL Safety Index Summit is to establish an open and actionable dialogue across key stakeholders – experts from industry, academia, research and government – so we can develop a holistic view of unintentional safety issues and then collaborate via research and resources to mitigate those issues,” continued Wroth. “We’re also committing support to stakeholder teams who continue to make positive safety impacts beyond the Summit. We want to ensure Summit participants have every opportunity to take the event’s data from insight to action.”

The UL Safety Summit will be held at the Grand Hyatt Erawan in Bangkok, Thailand. You can follow the Summit proceedings via Twitter @ul_datascience. For more information on the UL Safety Index, visit www.ULSafetyIndex.org.
